MOVEMENT STRENGTHENING PROGRAM
DIWA’s Regional Engagement and Movement Strengthening Program focuses on building solidarity, visibility, and coordination among organizations of women and girls with disabilities across Africa. The program aims to ensure that women with disabilities are not only part of regional and continental movements, but are recognized as leaders, decision-makers, and agenda-setters in Africa’s equality and justice landscape.
Through this program, DIWA strengthens the capacity of national networks, supports the formation of new country chapters, and facilitates cross-regional collaboration among members in East, Southern, West, Central, and North Africa. It serves as a unifying platform for advocacy, knowledge sharing, and collective action on issues affecting women and girls with disabilities.
“Movement building is the heartbeat of DIWA. It is how we connect voices, nurture leadership, and ensure that women with disabilities lead Africa’s transformation from the ground up.”
The program drives collaboration through regional convenings, joint campaigns, and leadership exchanges with feminist, human-rights, and disability-rights organizations. DIWA also engages actively with African Union organs, regional economic communities (RECs), and civil-society networks such as the Civil Society Regional Network (CSRN), African Disability Forum (ADF), FEMNET, and Inclusion Africa, ensuring intersectional representation in Africa’s development and governance dialogues.
- Movement Strengthening and Coordination – supporting member organizations to build strong, inclusive, and accountable national movements of women with disabilities.
- Regional and Continental Engagement – ensuring meaningful participation of women with disabilities in African Union, Pan-African Parliament, and ACHPR processes.
- Coalition Building and Partnerships – fostering collaboration with feminist, youth, and human-rights movements to advance shared goals on equality and justice.
- Intergenerational Leadership and Mentorship – connecting emerging young women leaders with seasoned advocates to sustain Africa’s movement of women with disabilities.
Through this program, DIWA has led and co-organized multiple sub-regional convenings, continental dialogues, and joint advocacy campaigns, amplifying the voices of women with disabilities and ensuring that their priorities are reflected in Africa’s regional and global development agendas.
